Elastase Test

The elastase stool test measures the amount of elastase, an essential digestive enzyme produced by the pancreas, in the stool. Elevated levels of elastase in the stool are indicative of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), a condition where the pancreas fails to produce enough digestive enzymes. EPI can lead to difficulties in digesting fats and absorbing nutrients, resulting in symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and malnutrition.

The test is crucial for diagnosing EPI, especially in cases of chronic pancreatitis or cystic fibrosis, and involves providing a stool sample following specific instructions provided by the healthcare provider. Treatment for EPI typically includes pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT), vitamin supplementation, dietary modifications, and lifestyle changes to manage symptoms and improve overall digestive health.
