Sex Hormone Binding Globulin Test

The SHBG Blood Test measures the levels of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) in the bloodstream, a protein primarily produced by the liver. SHBG regulates the availability of sex hormones by binding to them, making them inactive for tissue use. This test is particularly useful in assessing testosterone activity in both men and women. In males, testosterone is crucial for libido, muscle mass maintenance, and sperm production, while in females, it supports organ health, bone density, and muscle growth.

Elevated or reduced SHBG levels can indicate hormonal imbalances, providing insight into conditions such as hypothyroidism, diabetes, obesity, or liver disease. Interpretation of results is usually done alongside total testosterone levels, aiding in the assessment of free testosterone availability for tissue use. This test is essential for diagnosing symptoms related to abnormal testosterone levels and may be ordered alongside other tests to evaluate hormonal balance, especially in cases of early puberty in children.
